Holthinrichs LAB Series 1 If you're into independent watchmaking, then you've probably heard of Holthinrichs. But if not, they're definitely worth having on your radar. Based in the Dutch town of Delft, Holthinrichs is the brainchild ofarchitect-turned-watchmaker Michiel Holthinrichs who helped pioneer the use of 3D printing in watchmaking, which has allowed them to create magnificently ornate and complex cases with Art Deco and Art Nouveau inspiration. And as we've said before, watches created by people from non-traditional watchmaking backgrounds, such as industrial designers, architects, Jewellers and engineers create some of most well thought out and cohesive designs, think Urwerk, Ressence, Romain Gauthier, Bulgari, Hermes amongst others, and Holthinrichs is no different. The reference we have here is known as the LAB 1, and is one of their coolest watches to date. Launched in 2024, the LAB is a special series within their Ornament range with a focus on innovation, pushing the boundaries of design, technology and craftsmanship to create something truly special. The case itself is 3D printed Grade 5 Titanium, measuring in at 38.5mm and just 9.85mm thick, but tending to wear a little larger than that due to almost cushion-cased wearing experience provided by the long, skeletonized and ultra-thin lugs that stretch to the middle of the case-back, completely disconnected from the mid-case. In fact, these lugs are the thinnest used in the watch industry, something allowed by the use of 3D printing. Within this ornate case lies a dial made in-house by hand. The domed shape is crafted out of a solid piece of metal, with a central sunburst pattern laser engraved into the dial, with a copper patina manually applied which makes all dials unique in their particular pattern and oxidisation. It is surrounded by applied markers which appear to almost float above the dial, and creates a depth that is quite astounding for a watch that is so thin. This particular example was specified with no lume, to keep it on the dressier side. Powering it is a Sellita SW300, a pragmatic choice and something we like to see on time-only watches for ease of serviceability and reliability, though it has been enhanced with an in-house designed and manufactured rotor for some added visual sparkle. Finishing it off is a spectacular strap made of rooster feet leather. Yep, you read that right. Sounds odd, but the finish is amazing, and it is extremely supple on the wrist. It is fixed with a 3d printed buckle echoing the skeletonized case. This particular example was delivered in 2025 and remains in TZ 'Near Mint' condition, with the only real mark of note being a scuff on the bezel between 11 and 12. Keeping COSC time measured dial-up on a timegrapher, and remains under the balance of manufacturers warranty until June 2027.
